Between LinkedIn job listings with thousands of applicants, mass layoffs,\u00a0and concepts like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/low-hire-low-fire-layoffs-employees-stuck-unemployment-job-seekers-2025-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the great freeze<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/18\/quiet-cracking-workplace-culture-employees-burnout-disengagement-mental-health-billions-business-loss-managers-ai-promotions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quiet cracking<\/a>\u201d taking over the headlines \u2014 it seems like one of the only ways to stay positive is to turn off the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to feel optimistic when traditional paths to employment feel like they are collapsing beneath us. But when old systems stop serving us,&nbsp;it\u2019s time to get creative and figure out alternative routes to make money that make use of our talents. Luckily, there\u2019s another option: Stop waiting for the job market to give you a break, and start paving your own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;Stop waiting for the job market to give you a break, and start paving your own way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve never been one to follow rules. Growing up, I wasn&#8217;t very studious and scraped by with B\u2019s and C\u2019s. I relied on my charm and talked a lot in class to distract from the fact that I wasn&#8217;t doing my reading assignments. The thing was, when society told me I had to do <em>anything<\/em> a certain way, it made me want to rebel \u2014&nbsp;and school was no exception. My parents worried I wasn\u2019t \u201capplying myself,\u201d but I always believed I\u2019d be successful once I found something that actually interested me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My freshman year of college, that moment came when I took a graphic design class. And all of a sudden \u2014 something clicked. I loved being able to start with a blank canvas and design something exactly as I wanted to \u2014 and beyond that \u2014 I loved having a skill that I knew other people needed\u2026 and would pay for. As it turned out, my friend\u2019s mom had a social media business that needed graphics designed for her Facebook page \u2014 and I had the na\u00efve confidence to take on the job as a freelancer when I was 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;When we understand our value \u2014 and aim to provide it \u2014 there will always be opportunities for us, despite a mercurial job market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Flash forward \u2014\u00a0I\u2019m now 32 and have been freelancing ever since. What started as a \u201cside hustle\u201d progressed to full-time self-employment, doing everything from marketing, strategy, websites, writing, content, and creative direction. I\u2019ve found an alternative, abundant, and flexible career without climbing the corporate ladder \u2014 and I\u2019ve coached over 100 creatives in the past year on how to define their services, set their rates, and get clients, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I firmly believe that when we understand our value \u2014 and aim to provide it \u2014 there will always be opportunities for us, despite a mercurial job market. And the first step is understanding what you have to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcd3 This is a workshop-style article, so grab a notebook to work through the prompts in this 5-step guide to monetizing your skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-identify-your-skills\">Step 1: Identify your skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have skills that people would pay for. Monetizing them starts with identifying them.&nbsp;If you currently have, or have had a full time job&nbsp;\u2014 you should know that you can take your skills out of your role, and turn them into freelance services!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started, list out all of the tasks you do \/ or have done &#8211; at your current or previous job. Some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-a-copywriter-that-might-look-like\"><strong>If you\u2019re a copywriter, that might look like:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Writing blog posts or website copy that grabs attention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating email newsletters people enjoy reading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coming up with captions in the brands tone of voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing other people\u2019s writing so it sounds clean and clear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doing quick research to come up with story ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-an-operations-manager-that-might-look-like\"><strong>If you\u2019re an operations manager, that might look like:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organizing projects so things actually get done on time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting up systems that make everyone\u2019s job easier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeping track of budgets and vendors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing team communication so nothing falls through the cracks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training new hires or helping teammates learn the ropes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcbb<strong>Cheat code<\/strong>: <em>If you\u2019re feeling stuck, use this ChatGPT prompt \u201cIf I am a [insert your job title], what tasks do I perform at my job every day?\u201d Use this as a jumping off point, and delete anything that does not apply to you. Your final list should only include things you have experience in.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, <strong>let\u2019s look at your hobbies, interests, and the practical things you\u2019re good at.<\/strong> Sometimes the things that come naturally to you are exactly what someone else needs help with. Examples<em>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hosting holidays and dinner parties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleaning and organizing spaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knitting, crafting, or making handmade gifts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creative writing or journaling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooking, baking, or meal prepping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping friends with resumes or job interviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking great photos or making aesthetic social media posts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And lastly, <strong>take inventory of your soft skills<\/strong> \u2014&nbsp;they are often overlooked but highly monetizable and translate into consulting, coaching, workshops, and just being an overall great service provider. Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong communication and interpersonal skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching and training others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problem-solving under pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leadership and management&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creativity and design thinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Confidence comes from knowing your value \u2014 and taking time to reflect on your talents and accomplishments is a powerful way to reclaim your power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-turn-your-skills-into-marketable-services\">Step 2: Turn your skills into marketable services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know what you have to offer, let\u2019s choose 3-4 of them to turn into services. Ideally, these are related to each other, so that you can bring dynamic value to your future clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-sure-the-skills-you-select-meet-these-criteria\">Make sure the skills you select meet these criteria:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They come easily to you<\/strong>: Focus on what you can do effortlessly \u2014 then you will feel more confident offering it as a service. If you choose skills you\u2019re not that experienced in, even if you\u2019ve done them before, don\u2019t be surprised if imposter syndrome sets in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;Find something that pays the bills quickly first, so you don\u2019t have to put pressure on your beloved hobbies or art to provide for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t hate doing them<\/strong>: The reason the qualification isn\u2019t \u201cchoose what you love the most\u201d is because when you need to make money, sometimes you have to choose the skills that have the most demand versus the skills you love the most. For example \u2014 project management vs. knitting. I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t make money knitting \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?awinmid=6220&amp;awinaffid=328967&amp;campaign=&amp;clickref=&amp;ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.etsy.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dscarves%26ref%3Dsearch_bar&amp;platform=pl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">hello Etsy!<\/a> \u2014 but it just might take longer, so find something that pays the bills quickly first, so you don\u2019t have to put pressure on your beloved hobbies or art to provide for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There is a clear market for them<\/strong>: As a way to vet your skills, have a quick think about what types of businesses or people need them (we will build this out more next). Let\u2019s identify your ideal clients, so that you can start looking for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take your 3-4 defined services, and <strong>list out the people you imagine needing them<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you landed on \u201cPersonal Chef &amp; Meal Prep Specialist\u201d and you\u2019re going to offer meal prep services, your target clients could look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New postpartum mothers, ordering for themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friends of postpartum mothers, looking to order for their friends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Busy parents who don\u2019t have time to cook<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Busy entrepreneurs who don\u2019t enjoy cooking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People on special diets: paleo, plant based, Whole30, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caregivers who need extra support cooking for their loved ones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s take it a step further, and <strong>think of people you know <\/strong>\u2014 who you\u2019d feel comfortable reaching out to who fit these descriptions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your sister who just had a baby<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your neighbors, who are jugging 3 kids and 2 fulltime jobs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your friend from yoga class, who is on a plantbased diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your partner\u2019s friend, who runs 2 businesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And even one step beyond that, list out some <strong>people who you don\u2019t know directly, but could get introductions to<\/strong>, cold email, or market to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your yoga studio, full of plant based patrons \u2014 maybe you could hang up fliers, or advertise in their newsletter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mom community groups, looking for supportive resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nutritionists, personal trainers, or wellness coaches who could refer clients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local businesses or coworking spaces with busy employees who might want weekly meal prep services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know who needs your services, it\u2019s time to figure out how much to charge and how to get your first clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-set-your-prices\">Step 4: Set your prices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to setting your prices, start with an hourly rate. You can use this to bill by the hour, or multiply it to come up with project fees. Here are some ideas you can execute on that are free:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Update LinkedIn<\/strong>: Add your new service to your headline and work experience. Make your email easy to find in the contact section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Post weekly on LinkedIn<\/strong>: Let your network know what you\u2019re offering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use Instagram<\/strong>: Update your existing account or start a new one.
