As a naturally open person, I\u2019ve had to learn (and re-learn) how to protect my emotional energy this time of year. Because protection, I\u2019ve found, isn\u2019t a one-and-done act. And most importantly, this ongoing process can be done gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide isn\u2019t about shutting yourself off or becoming rigid. It\u2019s about cultivating spiritual and energetic protection while still honoring your softness, intuition, and openness. To help explore this nuanced balance, I spoke with three intuitive practitioners \u2014 psychic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfawn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crystal Fawn<\/a>, energy healer <a href=\"https:\/\/kesaine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kesaine Walker<\/a>, and certified guide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metropolitanhealingarts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Holly Harnsongkram<\/a> \u2014 about how to approach emotional protection as a sacred and sustainable practice during the spooky season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-the-season-can-feel-so-overstimulating\">Why the season can feel so overstimulating<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Autumn, especially in the northern hemisphere, carries a particular charge. \u201cIt\u2019s a very wacky mix of both frenzy for the harvest and stark realism,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itscrystaland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fawn<\/a>. \u201cWe end up being excited and scared at the same time, which leaves us feeling a bit tapped out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the external shifts (like cooler air and shorter days), there\u2019s the internal pressure that comes with this season\u2019s cultural and spiritual symbolism. \u201cThe collective focus on the supernatural tends to open up an energetic field,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kesaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walker<\/a>. \u201cFor empaths or highly sensitive people, that means the chances of picking up psychic debris from others and the environment are higher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;In addition to the external shifts (like cooler air and shorter days), there\u2019s the internal pressure that comes with this season\u2019s cultural and spiritual symbolism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Harnsongkram adds that it\u2019s not just spooky media or social pressure that heightens this intensity. This makes so much sense in terms of the feelings I experience at the turn of fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-emotional-protection-actually-means\">What emotional protection *actually* means<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional and energetic protection isn\u2019t about cutting yourself off from the world. Instead, it\u2019s about intentionally managing your energy, so you\u2019re not constantly absorbing everything around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;It\u2019s about intentionally managing your energy, so you\u2019re not constantly absorbing everything around you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEnergetic protection is about clearing yourself and creating a safe container,\u201d says Walker. \u201cIt\u2019s taking the time to tend to your inner garden. It\u2019s all about keeping your frequency clean.\u201d Likening my energy to an inner garden? That\u2019s beautiful and easy for me to envision maintaining my energy as a process. After all, plants need tender care and ongoing maintenance or tune-ups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She goes on to add that it means incorporating tools from the elements. \u201cBreath and prayer for ether, smoke or music for air, salt baths or ocean dips for water, grounding through nature for earth, and candles or visualization for fire,\u201d says Walker. \u201cEach element brings you back to center without hardening your heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harnsongkram agrees, noting that trauma-informed energetic protection is rooted in restoring the flow of your energy field \u2014 not just building walls or keeping yourself enclosed. Through practices like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metropolitanhealingarts.com\/allservices\/p\/life-activation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Life Activation<\/a> or intentional rituals, she says, empaths can \u201cre-establish their natural energetic flow\u201d and strengthen their aura over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do you begin? It doesn\u2019t have to feel like a big undertaking. Fawn encourages people to start with clarity and permission: \u201cTry putting up Out of Office notices,\u201d she suggests, either literally or through visualization. \u201cThen slowly allow stuff back in when you feel ready. Usually what happens during OOO time is that we remember how being alone (energetically or otherwise) has its own limitations too, and we start to reassess the value of \u2018letting other people\u2019s energy\u2019 mix with our own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-you-might-be-absorbing-too-much\">Signs you might be absorbing too much<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we even get to rituals or remedies, it helps to recognize the signs that your energetic field may be overextended. These signs can be subtle and so easily dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou might feel heavy, foggy, or emotional for no reason,\u201d says Walker. \u201cOr it could be physical: tightness in the chest, tension in the gut, or a sudden dip in energy.\u201d She suggests simple interventions like rinsing your hands, moving your body, or doing a smoke cleanse. \u201cLow vibrations can\u2019t hold onto high frequency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;It helps to recognize the signs that your energetic field may be overextended. Fawn adds that even mundane tasks can become red flags. \u201cPicking a playlist, deciding on meals, sketching out a schedule; all of these things start to feel completely overwhelming. Which I think is normal and totally okay! But usually a sign that the call is coming from inside the house,\u201d she says. Her favorite trick? A New Age energy-clearing ritual that uses physical gestures and deep breathing to help you assess whether the energy you\u2019re feeling is yours or someone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harnsongkram offers an additional layer of insight: You may find yourself thinking thoughts that don\u2019t feel like your own. Or reacting to food prepared by someone in turmoil. \u201cWe also take in energy through food,\u201d she notes. \u201cSo if something feels \u2018off\u2019 in your body, trace it back\u2026 you might be absorbing more than you realize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spiritual-tools-for-protection-and-grounding\">Spiritual tools for protection and grounding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the experts emphasized that spiritual protection works best when it becomes a regular rhythm \u2014 like brushing your teeth, but for your aura. Here are a few favorite tools and rituals you can try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visualization-amp-energy-work\"><strong>Visualization &amp; Energy Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fawn: Visualize \u201cOut of Office\u201d signs. Meditate with clear quartz in your left hand and a dark grounding crystal in your right. Use prisms in your space to shift energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walker: Use the \u201csword of light\u201d or \u201cgolden sieve\u201d visualizations to cut cords and filter dense energy. Try \u201cI am safe, I am clear, I am sovereign,\u201d says Walker.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking in with your energy before and after social events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding \u201cenergetic commitments\u201d that you haven\u2019t explicitly consented to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protecting-yourself-without-closing-off\">Protecting yourself without closing off<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The heart of emotional protection isn\u2019t about isolation or only saying no. This practice is about integrating discernment into your decision-making and your intuition.<br><br>\u201cJust because someone drops their energy in your lap doesn\u2019t mean you have to sort through it,\u201d says Fawn. \u201cIf it\u2019s too much, you\u2019re allowed to toss it right out the window. Managing your own energy first isn\u2019t selfish; it\u2019s essential maintenance\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walker echoes this, too. She reminds readers that sensitivity is a form of strength. \u201cBeing sensitive to energy and seasonal shifts is a gift that just needs maintenance,\u201d she says. \u201cThe more you cleanse, ground, and protect yourself, the more magnetic your energy becomes\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;You are allowed to protect your softness.
