Or, an innocuous \u201clet\u2019s grab a drink\u201d text with a friend I haven\u2019t seen in years. And of course, there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/third-place-community-spaces\/\">third space<\/a> that has become so beautiful and rare. (My own third space has been the open-air brewery four blocks from my home.) Many of our third spaces <em>do <\/em>include drinking, and that\u2019s difficult \u2014 physically, mentally, financially.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol is a tricky bag to unpack for me, and for others that I know and love. Some days and weeks, I don\u2019t care a lick for it; others, I care a lot of licks. It\u2019s easier than most of us will admit to default to a glass of wine or a beer out of habit. Soon, we\u2019re reaching for another glass or can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others among us are evaluating their consumption carefully; it doesn\u2019t matter the reason, and it doesn\u2019t matter the duration. Some people will be sober their whole lives (or the rest of their lives), and some may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/sober-curious-practices\/\">dabble in sobriety<\/a> throughout various seasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start building a better relationship with ourselves, we can try to be more intentional about how and when we drink \u2014 or don\u2019t. I know I am trying to after this year. Wherever you are on the spectrum of sobriety, know that you\u2019re not alone. No matter your reason (pregnancy, mental health, don\u2019t like the taste, or otherwise!), I hope you understand that your experiences are valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of my favorite ways to connect and unwind \u2014 with 0 percent ABV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Psst! If you or someone you love is struggling, using alcohol to numb feelings regularly, or is regularly and negatively affected by drinking, seek out a <\/em><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.org\/pages\/en_US\/find-aa-resources\"><em>local support group<\/em><\/a><em> or <\/em><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol.org\/\"><em>call a hotline<\/em><\/a><em> to find the best ways to help.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Establish a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/mindfulness-exercises\/\">daily meditation or mindfulness habit<\/a> \u2014 you can schedule it for moments when you are particularly craving a cold one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Get good at crafting mocktails. You can make simple syrups (here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/blogs\/7-homemade-infused-simple-syrups-stock-your-spring-bar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple one to start with<\/a>), use your soda maker, and add beautiful garnishes for the full treatment. <a href=\"https:\/\/mindfulmocktail.com\/easy-mocktails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here<\/a> are some fun recipes to try out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Go on a photo walk and see your neighborhood through a new lens. Bring a pal along and make it a social call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Participate in a community cleanup and meet your neighbors. <a href=\"http:\/\/laocb.org\/programs\/volunteer-cleanups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here<\/a> is a resource for our Los Angeles friends, but here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.budgetdumpster.com\/blog\/organize-successful-community-cleanup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">handy guide to planning a cleanup<\/a> no matter where you\u2019re at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Go camping, even if it\u2019s only in your backyard (or on your patio, if it\u2019s safe to do so). Hey \u2014 who says you can\u2019t cook s\u2019mores over a candle?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Kick back and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/how-to-read-poetry\/\">read a collection of poetry<\/a>, and allow yourself to read slowly and reflect on the experience and meaning of each poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. Or if you\u2019re feeling inspired, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/how-to-write-poetry\/\">give writing your own poetry a try<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t have to be good \u2014 just try putting pen to paper and see what you discover!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. Drop some eucalyptus oil in the diffuser, and give yourself a professional-grade facial at home (<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allure.com\/story\/how-to-give-yourself-facial\">here\u2019s how<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. If you are out and about and find yourself at a bar, ask the bartender for soda water with lime. You\u2019ll have an inconspicuous drink to sip on through the evening!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cGo camping, even if it\u2019s only in your backyard (or on your patio, if it\u2019s safe to do so).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>10. Go to your temple, church, or mosque. Or spend the evening at home in prayer. This does not have to be connected to a particular religious practice \u2014 quiet reflection and gratitude are universal. Plan a trip, or make a moodboard for your dream vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12. Break out an old game, book, or activity you enjoyed as a child (Pok\u00e9mon or mini-golf, anyone?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>13. Give yourself the gift of having an event to look forward to, by browsing sites like Groupon. Schedule a spa day, class, or outing based on what deals you can find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>14. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/substack-newsletters\/\">Start a Substack newsletter<\/a> about a topic you\u2019re passionate about. Spend your free time learning more about it so that you can share even more info!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15. Become a volunteer or a mentor for youths. (Psst \u2014 you can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/volunteering-online\/\">volunteer online<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>16. Get on a bike! It makes everyday local errands much more fun and fruitful, plus it\u2019ll cut down on your gas usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>40. Call your parent or grandparent, cousin, aunt, nephew \u2014 you get it. Get in touch with your family (chosen family works too!), and ask them how they\u2019re feeling right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cSet up a still life or find a beautiful location for inspiration, and dive into watercolor painting.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>41. DIY a little punch-needle rug for your bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f3l6VNgfNdk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tutorial here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>53. Do yourself a favor by prepping the chopping, marinating, and pureeing for all of the meals you will eat next week. Pop some dry beans into the crockpot while you\u2019re at it \u2014 you\u2019ll thank yourself later!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cGet your game face on and host a board game night.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>60. Or, cut down your food waste and toss your veggie scraps and ends into the freezer, then make a stock! Let \u2018er simmer all day long and enjoy the aromas that come with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>61. Play trivia with your friends or family \u2014 or just listen to a podcast like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trivialitypodcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Triviality<\/a> for casual and less competitive trivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>62. Take a creative writing workshop, or organize a writing group of your own. Communicating about each other\u2019s work and facilitating feedback are excellent skills to practice. Plan a date night around cooking a new dish together. Or, support a <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\">local bookstore<\/a> and peruse the aisles. Be sure to ask the staff for their favorites!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>68. Take in some art and wander the halls of the closest art museum. Museums may be open into the evenings, or you may be able to find <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/calendar\/groups\/58\">virtual versions of interesting exhibits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>69. Share an evening of massages with your partner. Whether it\u2019s old-school Nintendo or a new-age VR headset, break out the controller and get gaming.
