As long as there have been humans, we\u2019ve eaten seafood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seafood is an excellent source of lean protein, omega-3s, iron, and vitamins B and D, and it\u2019s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablefisheries-uw.org\/seafood-101\/cost-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most carbon-efficient foods<\/a> on the planet. It\u2019s that versatility that makes the fish the third most popular seafood in the US, after shrimp and salmon, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adriennecheatham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chef Adrienne Cheatham<\/a>. \u201cGiven its popularity, it\u2019s important to know how to look for sustainable tuna choices,\u201d says Cheatham, \u201cso we\u2019re ensuring healthy fish populations now and for our future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-makes-seafood-sustainable\">What makes seafood sustainable?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/en-us\/what-we-are-doing\/our-approach\/what-is-sustainable-seafood\">According to the MSC<\/a>, in order to be considered environmentally sustainable, seafood must come from healthy fish populations, have minimal impact on the marine ecosystem, and be properly managed (so no overfishing). Sustainable seafood can be harvested in perpetuity while still maintaining a healthy environment. That\u2019s what \u201csustainable\u201d means, after all \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/features\/sustainable-living-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">able to be sustained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSustainable seafood means it has been caught in a way that means there\u2019s plenty more fish in the sea now and in the future,\u201d says the MSC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a fishery is certified with the MSC <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/en-us\/what-we-are-doing\/our-approach\/the-blue-fish-label\">blue fish label<\/a>, it means that the fishery meets MSC\u2019s sustainability standards\u2014namely, that the fishery (1) maintains healthy fish populations, (2) minimizes its impact on the environment, and (3) fishes in responsibly managed areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-regular-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><br>&#8220;Sustainable seafood means it has been caught in a way that means there\u2019s plenty more fish in the sea now and in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><em>&#8211; Marine Stewardship Council<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of the fish we get here in the states is wild caught, seafood harvested via aquaculture is the fastest-growing form of food production worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/insight\/understanding-sustainable-seafood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA). Note that not all wild-caught seafood is sustainable, and neither is all aquaculture seafood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because most of our fish comes from the ocean, it\u2019s especially important to purchase sustainably fished seafood to ensure healthy fish and marine populations in the future. \u201cI\u2019ve worked with seafood for the entirety of my cooking career and am incredibly passionate about making sure we have access to it for years to come,\u201d says Cheatham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-know-if-your-seafood-was-harvested-sustainably\">How do you know if your seafood was harvested sustainably?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<p><br>In short, read the labels! One of the easiest indicators to look for is the MSC blue fish label, meaning the product has been certified to the <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/en-us\/standards-and-certification\/fisheries-standard\">MSC Fisheries Standard<\/a>. The MSC blue fish label provides assurance that the seafood is wild-caught and comes from a certified sustainable source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to determine your seafood\u2019s sustainability? Research the company that makes it. Her tuna tonnato is full of pantry staples like relish, mustard, and tuna, along with a few fresh veggies for a \u201clight, bright dish that\u2019s perfect for spring and summer,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/en-us\/what-you-can-do\/sustainable-recipes\/recipe\/tuna-tonnato-salad---dk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full recipe here<\/a>, which uses lemon, celery, onion, eggs, and potato to liven up tuna salad, bringing it from sad desk lunch territory into \u201ca great lunch or a patio snack to fix for guests, or dinner on a night in,\u201d says Cheatham. She serves the tuna mixture over greens and alongside some satisfying, crusty bread.
