I get a little “over the top” on social media (posting a lot, asking for questions, engaging more, even if it can be a little embarrassing) around my period. Over time, I’ve learned to accept my sometimes impulsive desire for attention, and it has become a monthly (at least) catalyst for connection, conversation, and community. Sometimes the things we’re embarrassed about — even “delulu” about — can be exactly what we desire at a certain moment, and don’t need to be taboo. I’m a lil more lively around my period and that’s okay!

Thinking back, it was a great tool that got me into and out of some wonderful situations. Until reading this, I had forgotten it. I’m as grateful that I came across it again as I am that I took a pause to read this article. I live by a principle that sometimes you have to go for it and trust yourself to figure it out along the way— a “throw your hat over the fence” philosophy my favorite aunt always said.

Something completely shifted in me during college. I went from being someone who never spoke up to shocking my family with what I’ve been able to achieve simply by finding my voice.

At first, I think my drive came from a fear of being unsuccessful. But now, I realize there are so many people (predominantly men) who confidently ask for what they want despite being wildly unqualified, literally and figuratively, and they end up making life harder for everyone around them.

So, I owe it to myself and to the people I care about to take control and be a little delusional about what I can achieve.
