The description fits that these hobbies are time-consuming, quiet, soft, and quaint. They are hobbies often done by older people who want those characteristics and have time for it. If you think it’s a bad thing, maybe you need to re-evaluate what you think of age.

Not only ageist and insulting, but for so many generations of women, many of them weren’t/aren’t considered hobbies vs home necessities in the first place. That said, thank you for writing about their mindfulness and community value!

I’ve always loved brushing dogs and trimming my own pups hair and to learn this art would be so rewarding and practicing it so therapeutic. Thanks for the ideas!

I have been saving DIY kids toys on pinterest to make some stuffies for the new little ones in my family. Everything is made out of plastic, so I am going to learn how to make my own toys with natural fibers. I remember being young and having time for these hobbies, my Nana taught me how to do most of them, sitting beside her at the sewing machine, or peering over the table covered in scrap booking. I’m sad that I haven’t kept it up but excited to start again! Another hobby that I am looking into is shoe-making. It’s one that seems quite daunting, but I’m looking into icanmakeshoes.com for some helpful tips and resources.

I feel like it undermines these hobbies, many of which have historically been women’s work and necessary for survival. I consider myself young, not yet 40, and been doing 10 out of the 16 listed most of my life (I learned to knit at age 7 for example and knot all of mine and my families socks) not because it’s trendy but because these skills are both important and enjoyable. I agree with everything in the article….I just wish the positive narrative of these hobbies came with a more apt name.

Before the meeting, I sat down at my sewing machine and did some very simply stitches that did require focus and patience. I somehow instinctively craved that quiet time with my fabric and sewing machine, and it helped me to calm down. I love playing cards (have learned new games since moving to the midwest from CA), spend time sewing, and tending to my indoor garden of ivy plants. Thank you for the insight into jigsaw puzzles. I have always sort of looked down at my nose at them, since I considered the ‘non-productive’. But reading your article has given me a different outlook. I MAY just try one! (And I can’t wait to read the sourdough article!)

I’ve been doing these most of my life, and continue to do so as a grandmother. Definitely what keeps me grounded…

Everything we do is based in meaningful and functional activities, with all of the underlying science to back it up.
