The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of editors has spent the last ten years testing the best organic, nontoxic, and eco-friendly mattresses across price points. These are our top selections in 2025.

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping — and there’s no better place to invest in our well-being! 😴

Over the last decade, our editorial team has reviewed dozens of organic mattresses in our own homes and with our own families. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories in person, investigate proper certification and material use, interview the brands’ leadership teams, scour online reviews, and annually survey our audience for up-to-date consumer preferences.

Why choose an organic mattress?

Organic mattresses use certified organic materials, including natural wool, latex, and cotton. They avoid the risks of harmful substances that may harm immunity, hormone health, and the nervous system. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep. Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function,” emphasizes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino.

Organic materials and production practices also ensure a more eco-friendly environmental impact. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the primary global body that governs a rigorous certification process for organic fibers, but we’ve outlined all the relevant organic certifications. While many greenwashing companies use words like “natural” and ”organic” as unfounded marketing terms, less than 2% of mattresses on the market actually receive organic certifications.

Each mattress on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we don’t order mattresses to a showroom; we actually bring these beds into our homes and sleep on them for months (or years!) to test long-term comfort and durability. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences.

Rest assured, every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safety and eco-friendly production and has been tested firsthand by one or more of our editors. This guide has also been medically reviewed by Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC CERTIFICATIONS | Every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safe materials and eco-friendly production; each brand’s specific certifications are listed in the icon section above their feature. None of the mattresses on this list contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key, so we try each mattress ourselves, spend hours scouring online reviews, and represent all the feedback from our readers that we collect through surveys, comments, and emails. The brands on this list are here because they are organic and people love to sleep on them.
  • AFFORDABLE | Every brand on this list sells directly to the consumer online and ships the mattress to your home, removing retail costs and reducing the final price. We’ve provided a range of options, from budget to luxury, without compromising safety.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | All of the brands on this list employ eco-friendly production practices that help reduce water pollution, sequester carbon in the soil, and support biodiversity. Many of these companies also give back to their communities by donating high-quality organic mattresses to housing shelters and families in need.

Avocado stands out as one of the best organic mattresses thanks to its certified materials, comfort, and transparency — and it’s our editors’ top pick. It’s the kind of grown-up purchase that’s truly transformed our sleep, with noticeably better rest (and improved sleep scores) across our team.

Co-founders Alex and Jeff D’Andrea couldn’t find an affordable, safe, and truly nontoxic mattress for their family — one free from petroleum-based polyurethane foams, toxic flame retardants, chemical adhesives, and off-gassing VOCs. In a marketplace filled with greenwashing and white-labeled beds, Avocado stands apart with ownership in its entire supply chain while meeting the most rigorous standards for health and sustainability.

Each organic mattress is handmade in California using GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool from India, and GOLS-certified organic latex from India and Guatemala. Some premium models even include plush FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions and built for a wide range of sleepers — from side to stomach to back.

The brand also offers a vegan-certified mattress, an organic cotton mattress protector, a waterproof mattress protector, and a wide range of sustainably made solid wood furniture. As members of 1% for the Planet, Avocado gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, is a Certified B Corporation, and is even a Climate Neutral Certified brand. Our editors have personally reviewed the flagship mattress, the luxurious plush mattress, the budget-friendly Eco Organic mattress, and the popular Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

This year our team of editors visited the Avocado mattress facility in Fullerton, CA, where we joined co-CEO of Avocado Green Brands Vy Nguyen for a tour to see how these mattresses get made. We even got to see a demo of hand needle-tufting, where long steel needles thread cotton straps through the mattress to secure the layers in place without using glue. It’s a highly skilled, time-intensive process that keeps natural materials from shifting and improves durability.

Kayti Christian has long brown hair and bangs, wearing a black turtleneck and hoop earrings, smiles softly in front of a plain background.

Our Editor’s Review of Avocado

“Somewhere between entering my 30s and settling into the city I plan to call home for the foreseeable future, I realized I needed to stop buying Ikea mattresses off Craigslist. I ultimately decided on Avocado’s Pillow-Top mattress (featuring a Euro-style button-tufted pillow top) since my husband and I are both side sleepers. It’s an added expense but ultimately worth it, in my opinion, since you don’t need to add your own topper. I felt supported and snuggled in. […] Since receiving the Green Mattress, I’ve been getting better rest, and my sleep scores have reflected that. My chiropractor has noticed my spine health is looking great, too. My husband loves the mattress as well, and he’s a hard sell when it comes to mattresses and pillows!”

Birch’s natural and organic mattress may just be the coziest mattress ever. The NYC-based brand boasts OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications and, for every mattress sold, Birch plants one tree through the National Forest Foundation. This green mattress is made with organic, natural, hypoallergenic, and anti-microbial materials, including a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool (from New Zealand), and sustainably-tapped latex to keep even the warmest sleeper cool. For support, the individually wrapped steel coils (steel made in the USA) offer extra comfort and optimized pressure relief. We’ve personally tested this mattress and found it soft and springy, while still feeling supportive (see that it’s a medium firmness) and offering excellent edge support. We especially love the support of the Birch Luxe! With all its awards and natural mattress components, Birch makes it easy to sleep soundly and safely.

Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the 3Z manufacturing facility in early 2024 and got to see firsthand how Birch mattresses are made from start to finish. John Merwin, the CEO of 3Z and founder of Brooklyn Bedding led the tour for a select group of editors, answering our questions and even letting us get hands-on experience sewing edge seams on tufted mattress covers. (Did you know they pour their foam and make all their springs in-house? It’s quite the production!)

Randi Donahue is a woman with brown hair in a pink top sits near a window, reflecting on her latest mattress review, as a plant thrives in the background.

Our Editor’s Review of Birch

“After months of sleeping on our Birch Luxe mattress, my husband and I are well-rested and clear on what we’ve missed out on all these years. We are delighted with this mattress; our 8 and 10-year-old daughters agree. […] My only issue was the edge of the mattress, in other words the full perimeter reinforcement, was flipped up, almost like a lip around the edge of the bed; I believe it was still from the way it was shipped because it has since relaxed a bit, or at least I’ve gotten used to it now. This mattress helps me sleep better, so much so that I’ve gone from avoiding bedtime to looking forward to it. Now, I just have a more challenging time getting up. In addition to deeper, better-quality sleep, I’ve also noticed my body feels refreshed and ache-free. I also went from a restless side sleeper to a comfy combo sleeper — spending a good part of the night on my back and sans any pillow between my knees.”

PlushBeds is a leading online luxury mattress manufacturer and retailer, specializing in organic mattresses and bedding. All products are handcrafted in their GOLS and GOTS Certified organic production facility in California, with free shipping within the contiguous USA. Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the PlushBeds facility in Camarillo, California, where she learned about how much the brand’s quality ethos is inspired by the most legacy mattress makers in Europe — and how, at the end of the day, quality is the name of the game. The company offers a thorough selection of certified organic and eco-friendly mattresses at accessible prices, especially through key holidays, so keep an eye out for their promotions (although the brand also has luxury mattresses at top-tier price points — trust us, we’ve experienced them firsthand and the quality is unmatched). Each of the brand’s mattresses is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring your bed has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low chemical emissions (plus, the brand never uses PFAS in its production). The company also provides environmental scholarships for college students, gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, and offsets 100% of its carbon emissions via TerraPass. For us side sleepers, we especially love PlushBeds memory foam options, which is one of the best types of mattresses for side sleepers. It doesn’t give us too much — or too little — firmness. Medium is just right!

Kate Arceo, a woman with long brown hair smiles while wearing a white top.

Our Editor’s Review of PlushBeds

“After our first night of sleep on our Signature Bliss mattress, I noticed it was the first morning in weeks that I’d woken up without any aches and pains. Sometimes I’m not aware I’m not sleeping well until I get one really good night of sleep — anyone else? That’s how this particular morning was. Noticing how deeply I’d slept made me realize how poorly I’d been sleeping leading up until that point. […] Another noteworthy anecdote: Since sleeping on our new mattress, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in motion transfer. With a husband who tosses and turns and two little children who occasionally end up in between us, more nights than not I can feel at least one family member or another shifting around in our bed […] since upgrading to our PlushBeds mattress, the motion transfer is at an all-time low.”

The Bear Hybrid is a GREENGUARD Gold Certified mattress designed for athletes and the most active people. A luxury mattress with coils and cooling foams, it boasts a Celliant Sleep Technology to promote better sleep and faster muscle recovery. Bear’s mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring low VOCs and beds that are free from toxic chemicals and harsh flame retardants. In our testing, we’ve found the Bear Original to be an excellent budget-friendly option for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. The Bear Natural offers a cozy pillowtop feel on top of a firm base — which would also make it a good option for folks who toss and turn, since there’s low motion transfer. While most Bear models doesn’t offer the same organic certifications as the top three selections on this list, we still recommend it thanks to its safe certifications and accessible price point.

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

Our Editor’s Review of Bear

“I’ve always been an unfussy sleeper, but something has changed this year as I barrel toward my 35th birthday: I am now a hot sleeper. So while there was a bit of an adjustment period with the deep tufts on the Bear Elite, they provide airflow underneath me and help alleviate my night sweats — a worthwhile tradeoff if you ask me. The cushy top offers softness without sacrificing stability, and I’ve noticed that I stay asleep more consistently throughout the night, without the anxious wakeups. If you’re looking for a range of fully organic certifications, you might want to check elsewhere; however, Bear mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams. As someone who is currently prioritizing performance, this aligns with my values!”

Purchasing a quality mattress is an investment, and it can feel like a daunting decision. But Awara makes it easy to take the leap with a 365-night trial, premium customer service, and a forever warranty. Our editor took the plunge with an Awara (and in her dream size, the Cal King!) and she and her husband have slept like babies and never looked back.

We love Awara’s natural luxury hybrid mattress for its breathability and organic components, as well as the nine-inch contouring support core for pressure relief. It’s firm yet plush, and we feel confident the mattress is supporting our bodies and aiding in a healthy night’s sleep. Its ability to keep hot sleepers cool at night is outstanding (hello, fellow sweaty sleepers! 👋), the latex is breathable and the coils boost airflow. The mattress comes straight to your door in a cardboard box, and it’s as easy as rolling it out and using the fabric handles to place it on your bed frame for a supremely cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

Langa Chinyoka has long braided hair, wears a white T-shirt and stands in front of a bookshelf.

Our Editor’s Review of Awara

I like a firm mattress, so the Awara mattress was perfect for me. It had just enough give (admittedly, I did do a bounce test and it passed with flying colors) while retaining its shape. I’ve been a tosser and turner my whole life, but I slept like a stone on my Awara. From someone who has been called a restless sleeper by everyone I have shared a bed with, this was a monumental achievement. If you prefer an ultra-plush feel, you might find the Awara too firm, even after you’ve slept on it for weeks or months. But for hot sleepers, I can’t recommend the Awara mattress enough. Is this how everyone else has been living during hot summers? I can’t believe cool sleepers have been gatekeeping this from me my whole life.”

Ashley D'Arcy has long brown hair and a visible tattoo on their upper arm and is sitting indoors.

Our Editor’s Review of Brentwood Home

“Brentwood Home’s Oceano mattress is medium soft, rated a 4.5/10, but with reinforcement from springs and edge protection. […] I have fewer aches and pains, and I feel so much more comfortable throughout the night. It’s brought me back to a sense of comfort that I thought I left behind in childhood. One thing to note is that this mattress measures in at 14 inches tall, adding 3+ inches to our existing setup. We might have to rethink our current platform bed frame, but it’s more than worth it!”

Saatva is a leading disruptor in the mattress industry. Saatva’s disruptive model goes even further than distribution as the mattresses are made with plant-based, eco-friendly materials and crafted in the USA. The company also gives back, donating hundreds of natural mattresses to high-need organizations around the country.

Several of our editors rave about the luxury innerspring mattress — it’s their forever pick. For a memory foam mattress comparable to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic (but at a fraction of the cost), we love Loom & Leaf, Saatva’s memory foam line. While memory foam is not an all-natural material, these mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the foam is low in VOCs. For a latex option, Saatva’s Zenhaven Mattress is 100% all-natural Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. The Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water-based, minimizing the amount of environmentally harmful byproducts.

Trinity Wilbourn has wavy hair, and is wearing a white top and necklaces, gazes upward thoughtfully.

Our Editor’s Review of Saatva

“Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm features a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky and my lower back pain is gone. I recommend this mattress if you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life! If you want a super squishy mattress, or something super firm, you’ll want to opt for a different firmness and perhaps a different mattress altogether.

Courtney Jay Higgins has wavy, shoulder-length hair and wears a rust-colored top and a green scarf, smiling at the camera.

Our Editor’s Review of Leesa

“After sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, our Leesa x West Elm Natural Hybrid Mattress feels even more comfortable and slightly contoured to our bodies. My husband and I have both been sleeping more soundly, and any of those minor neck or shoulder pains we’ve had have gone away (!). We credit this to the uniquely designed, individually encased springs. They adjust to the body during the night, so you’re supported in any position you find yourself in. I’ve found it makes a huge difference in how good I’m feeling in my body during the day. This mattress is considered medium-firm due to the supportive spring interior, but it feels more plush overall. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, this could be too soft.

Our Editor’s Review of My Green Mattress

“The Pure Eco mattress has just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. The feeling of this mattress is on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. Instead, this mattress features a pocketed coil spring system that provides added lumbar and edge support designed for overall comfort for kids and adults up to 400 lbs. The 1 1/4″ layer of GOTS-certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified dunlop latex gives that sink-your-toes-in feeling while being eco-friendly and PFAS-free. After about an hour of too-excited-to-sleep zoomies, our daughter crashed into one of her deepest sleeps on her first night. She’s reported nothing but love for her bed every night since!”

With a range of options, including mattresses for kids, vegan mattresses, as well as luxury customizable and split mattress options, we can see why the brand is so well-loved. Plus, all of their mattresses are formaldehyde-free, and made without PFAS or chemical flame retardants while still maintaining flammability standards. (Psst — the brand’s crib mattresses are waterproof without the use of harmful chemicals, too!)

Brianna Schubert has glasses and a striped shirt, and is sitting on a bed, thoughtfully resting an arm on their chin.

Our Editor’s Review of Naturepedic

“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times. Drawbacks include the high price tag and and the fact that this mattress is quite heavy, so find some help for bringing it in, unboxing it, and setting it up!”

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for an organic mattress:

There are now over 175 bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from 🤯. Selecting a new mattress is totally daunting! Especially since, as Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley writes, “[S]leep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Mattress shopping is an incredibly personal decision — and a steep investment — so it’s important to find the perfect fit. (Of course, our favorite brands listed above offer sleep trials to make sure you’re completely satisfied, but it’s never fun having to coordinate the return of a mattress that didn’t work out for you.) Here’s a look at what factors you might consider depending on the type of sleep preferences you have!

As Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert, notes: “When putting together the ideal sleep environment, it’s not just about optimizing temperature, humidity, noise, and light. Having the right mattress, pillows, and bedding can also help you feel relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest.”

Start your search with a budget and mattress size in mind, which may help you narrow down the type of mattress within your price range before considering other factors. We’ve listed the types of mattresses below in order from least expensive to most expensive.

Which type of mattress should you choose?

  • Innerspring mattresses are ideal for people who prefer a more traditional mattress feel (think: a little bouncy), and for folks who tend to sleep hot thanks to the good airflow around the springs.
    • Pros: Often more affordable, supportive, and breathable
    • Cons: You might notice squeaking or creaking, there’s not much motion isolation (so you’ll feel it if your partner tosses and turns), and innerspring mattresses may wear out faster than other types
  • Memory Foam mattresses are excellent for side sleepers and people who deal with joint pain. The foam offers greater motion isolation than innersprings do, which means you won’t wake up if your bedmate moves or gets up a lot.
    • Pros: Contours to your body, offering motion isolation and pressure relief
    • Cons: Can retain heat (watch out, hot sleepers), and depending on the materials you might experience off-gassing odors
  • Hybrid mattresses offer a balance of innerspring and foam mattresses. We think of them as the “Goldilocks beds” because they’re just right for a wide range of people. You’ll get support and comfort no matter how you sleep (especially if you sleep in multiple positions!).
    • Pros: A balance of support and comfort (not too firm or soft)
    • Cons: Can be heavy depending on the materials used, and more expensive because of the multiple components
  • Latex mattresses offer similar contouring and support to memory foam, which makes them a good choice for smell-sensitive people or folks with allergies. Latex is also naturally well-ventilated, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. And, of course, latex is a natural material so you can feel better about the eco-impact of your mattress. You can find a complete list of all-latex mattresses here. Both Dunlop and Talalay latex are good options — because of their different production methods, Dunlop will be more dense and Talalay will tend to be lighter and bouncier. Dunlop latex can be made with all natural materials, unlike Talalay which needs synthetic additives, which means Dunlop latex is the only option that can receive an organic certification.
    • Pros: Hypoallergenic, responsive without being too bouncy (or making you feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand, like some memory foam), and has impressive durability for many years of use
    • Cons: All-natural latex mattresses can get very heavy if they’re not mixed with other materials and often carry the highest price tags

Which firmness should you look for?

  • Back Sleepers typically enjoy medium-firm to firm mattresses. For support and spinal alignment, look for memory foam, latex, and firmer hybrid mattresses.
  • Side Sleepers will typically sleep well on soft to medium mattresses. Look for softer memory foam and hybrid mattresses to get relief when you’re lying on your shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach Sleepers will likely snooze best on firm mattresses. Look for firm innerspring and foam mattresses that reduce sinking so you can keep your spinal alignment.

Other important considerations when choosing a mattress:

  • Are you a sweaty sleeper? Hot sleepers will like the breathability of latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses. If you do opt for foam, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam for extra airflow. If looking into hybrid mattresses, we recommend looking for ones with natural fabrics in the top layers — like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex.
  • For cold sleepers, beds that you sink into will cover a larger surface area of your body (so think soft!), and you’ll benefit from the heat retention qualities of memory foam and other foam mattresses.
  • If you snore, you might want to look for mattresses compatible with adjustable bed frames to elevate your head and breathe more easily. Research has shown that even a 12-degree incline can be an unobtrusive way to reduce snoring and help you sleep through the night.
  • If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic mattresses made from organic latex and bamboo viscose or rayon. These materials also help protect against dust mites!
  • Consider your preferences between hand-tufted and other methods of combining layers, like glue. Some brands may use glues that won’t last as long as a quality tuft, or may contain toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your mattress.
  • Warranties are typically good for factory defects, but may not always cover standard wear and tear. Check with your mattress maker before deciding to see if you’ll be covered down the line if the mattress wears in ways you don’t like!
  • If you tend to roll around a bit at night, or want to maximize the usable surface of your mattress, look for models that offer a high level of edge support, which can help keep you on the bed. This is also handy if you have mobility issues and need extra firmness when getting out of bed in the morning.

What certifications ensure a mattress is organic or nontoxic?

While there are a range of natural materials that offer nontoxic sleep, we look for brands that carry additional certifications to ensure their mattresses are as safe as they claim to be. Here are the certifications we look for when it comes to organic (and sustainable) mattresses.

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. Only textile products made from 95% certified organic raw materials can become GOTS Certified. There are also stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. Because GOTS rigorous certification requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain, it is the gold standard for ensuring health and safety.
  • GOLS Certified: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) ensures that the latex in your mattress (and pillows) contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Similar to GOTS, GOLS also requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a nontoxic certification for everyday products, like mattresses, bedding, and skincare. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained, eliminating the worst hazards commonly found in products used in our homes and daily routines.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your mattress meets some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures the lowest emissions and off-gassing (making it especially good for folks who might be extra sensitive).
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a mattress is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a nontoxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are made without ozone depleters, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy to become a B Corp.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions — we look for these when searching for more sustainable options. Some companies even claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, although that is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most rigorous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • USDA Certified Organic: The USDA Organic seal assures consumers that raw materials like cotton or wool are 95% or more organic. This seal does not cover any chemicals used in the production process — or the entire mattress like GOTS does.
  • eco-INSTITUT Certification: The eco-INSTITUT label is awarded to mattresses that have been tested for harmful substances, odors, and emissions in order to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
  • FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) examines wood components like bed frames, as well as paper packaging materials. This certification ensures that these products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool, down, or leather). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. Just make sure that the entire mattress is vegan — not just a handful of the components.
  • 1% for the Planet: Members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.

What are common harmful substances found in traditional mattresses?

While you can find more affordable mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all mattresses are created equal. Most conventional mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that impact your home’s air quality as well as your health with chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gasses emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
  • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
  • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritation, chronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches, and some research suggests potential endocrine disruption.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the term for when a company pretends to be more environmentally friendly — or nontoxic — than they really are, usually through misleading marketing language. This is particularly prevalent in the mattress world, so our reviews focus only on brands that have trusted third party certifications like the ones listed above. Not every mattress will be perfect, but when it comes to such big investments in our daily routines and wellbeing, we want to know that the brands are accountable to outside sources for their claims about nontoxic materials and sustainable production.

How to care for an organic mattress (and why they last longer!)

A mattress can be a steep investment — especially when you opt for an organic or natural one. But the perks of a well-crafted mattress include longevity, with many of our favorite mattresses lasting for 25+ years while still maintaining quality and comfort. (And, compared to more “mainstream” brands that release more VOCs and can crumble as they age, you won’t get that funky smell or degradation with natural mattresses). That doesn’t mean you don’t have any upkeep; in order to keep your mattress cozy for the long haul, here’s how to best take care of it:

  • Always use a mattress protector to prevent spills from absorbing into the mattress (the number of times we’ve spilled coffee in bed has taught us this lesson firsthand).
  • Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturer’s suggested timeline. Each timeline may differ, but the standard is to rotate once every three to six months.
  • Snuggle up with natural and organic bedding to get the most breathability out of your new mattress — it’s a game-changer!
  • Clean spills immediately (and use a mattress protector, as noted above) to keep your mattress dry and mold-free. If you live in a humid environment, consider getting a dehumidifier to reduce moisture retention.

How long will an organic mattress last?

Standard mattresses have a 7-10 year lifespan, but many organic options on our list feature lifespans of 25 years and longer! Some even offer lifetime warranties; that’s how deeply the brand stands behind their product. Review each brand’s recommendations for how frequently to replace your mattress, but know that generally, the higher the investment, the longer the mattress should last.

How does The Good Trade’s editorial team review mattresses?

The Good Trade’s editors are a diverse team of writers and sustainable product enthusiasts who offer trusted brand recommendations based on our own hands-on testing and extensive research of third-party verifications, certifications, and accreditations. We rigorously test the products featured in our guides so we can provide you with sincere recommendations that meet our standards for sustainability and health.

We’ve slept on mattresses from these brands for over ten years, and have recommended them to friends and family based on our own experience. Additionally, we’ve met with the teams of each and every brand — often the founders and makers of the mattresses — and even toured massive mattress manufacturing facilities to see just how each mattress is made. We’re especially proud to be able to offer direct feedback to each brand to push their sustainability and nontoxic certifications further to ensure our readers can *actually* get a healthier night’s sleep.

We’ve also personally tested and reviewed the best organic bedding brands, including mattress toppers, protectors, and pillows, so you can make the most informed decision. If you have any questions or are in search of a recommendation, drop a note in the comments and we’ll point you in the right direction!

How To Make Your Small Space As Festive As Your Parents’ Home https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/cozy-small-holiday-decor/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/cozy-small-holiday-decor/#comments Tue, 09 Dec 2025 19:49:08 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/cozy-small-holiday-decor/ All the tips and tricks to making your apartment or small space as cheery as your childhood home!

The post How To Make Your Small Space As Festive As Your Parents’ Home appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
As my husband and I drive around Los Angeles to find the best Target parking lot to shop for our Christmas tree, I think about my rural childhood home in the mountains of Northern California. The closest thing to a parking lot tree farm was a field of knee-deep snow in your neighbor’s backyard or the Boy Scouts selling their own in a lot in front of the grocery store. Most years, it was either cut your own or drive an hour to the city to buy an artificial one. We always opted for the former.

The ceilings in my parents’ home are 20 feet tall, so the tree was always, quite literally, a Clark Griswold tree, complete with sap and melting snow. We used a ladder to place the ornaments and the angel while Nat King Cole crooned on the stereo (no streaming music then). The wood-burning fire—our primary heat source—filled the house with warmth as we wrapped gifts, made cookies, and dusted off our stockings from their 11-month break in the attic. From December 1 through the New Year, my parents’ home transformed into a magical holiday abode. Christmas time became a favorite childhood memory, and now that I have my own home, I hope to replicate that childhood experience or at least bring a little bit of the festivity into my smaller city apartment.

Of course, decorating for the holidays in a small space can be challenging, especially when working with a budget. How does anyone afford a Christmas tree—something that will die in three weeks—in this economy, let alone haul it up various flights of apartment stairs? And that’s if you are fortunate enough to have a car that could transport said tree to begin with.

“How does anyone afford a Christmas tree, let alone haul it up various flights of apartment stairs?”

Even if you don’t live in a city apartment, finding ways to make a small space cheery and bright, especially with sustainability in mind, can present a few challenges—no matter if you’re decorating for Christmas or Kwanzaa or Hanukkah or another December holiday. But that, for me, isn’t reason enough not to try. I won’t let minimal square footage or a balmy Los Angeles “winter” stop me from harnessing my holiday spirit! Here’s how I’m making my apartment as festive as my parents’ home:

1. Start with aroma and fragrance

During the holidays at my family home, the wood-burning stove was constantly roaring, a warm roast or stew was seemingly always on the stovetop, and the 15-foot evergreen tree fragranced the front half of the house. These combinations created the most wonderful aroma I’m convinced could turn even the most stubborn Scrooge into a holiday softie.

“Not only do candles provide a warm ambiance, but they can also make your space smell festive, too.”

To make my space smell just as festive without all of those things, I have a few favorite tips, including the most simple option of lighting a natural holiday candle (this is the collection I’m currently burning). Not only do candles provide a warm ambiance, but they can also make your space smell festive, too—just try to burn sustainable and nontoxic candles to keep your home healthy.

Additionally, you can fragrance your space with a simmering pot recipe or by creating a citrus garland. If you don’t have space for a tree, evergreen trimmings, or a natural wreath from Trader Joe’s or your local grocer, it smells wonderful, too! Another favorite trick is to diffuse holiday essential oils—like these warm and spicy blends from Saje. I love my little portable diffuser for moving around the apartment and filling each room with cheery scents.

2. Pick a festive focal piece

Growing up, the holidays never felt like they began until our tree was up and decorated. We always waited until after Thanksgiving (no judgment to the early birds!), which signaled the beginning of the Christmas season in our home.

“Whether it’s a menorah, a Christmas tree, or a mantle decorated with your favorite trinkets, every holiday space needs a festive focal point.”

Whether it’s a menorah, a Christmas tree, or a mantle decorated with your favorite trinkets, every holiday space needs a festive focal point, even the smallest ones. For me, it’s the live tree—we usually keep the height to about six feet, so it’s easy to manage up a flight of stairs with two people (pro tip: add a cordless vacuum to your Xmas list for swift pine needle clean up!). At the end of the season, check with your local municipal guidelines for disposing of your tree. Or, for a more sustainable option, call your local nurseries to see if they are collecting trees for compost!

If you don’t have a car, consider a small tabletop tree or another winter plant. Your festive focal point can be anything that brings you joy and makes your home feel warm and cozy. Ideally, it will be low waste and something you can recycle or use for years.

3. Cook your favorite holiday meals

On Christmas Eve, my mom always made a pot of chili. After church, we’d drive around the fancy neighborhoods to see all the houses lit up; then we’d head home, get in our holiday pajamas, and eat big bowls of chili at the kitchen counter. This became our tradition.

Think about the meals you love most that remind you of your best holiday seasons. If it’s something your grandparents or parents made, ask them for their recipe and try to put your own spin on it. Food has a way of making any space feel just like home; it’s also a low-waste festive option as it’s consumable and can even be shared with neighbors or friends.

4. String the lights

When I think back to Christmas at my parents’ house, it’s not the gifts or cookies or holiday films I remember most; it’s the way the entire house sparkled in the dark, how the windows seemed to glow from the end of the street and how the lights danced every night down the hallway.

“Twinkle lights have a way of cozying up any space and adding a bit of magic and warmth.”

Twinkle lights have a way of cozying up any space and adding a bit of magic and warmth—no matter the holiday you’re celebrating. Consider hanging a few strands inside your window (for neighbors to see!) or drape a strand across your TV console. Twinkle lights are also a wonderful way to boost your mood during what can sometimes be a difficult or lonely season. Littles love them, too, if you’re trying to make a small space festive for kids! For a more sustainable option, try solar twinkle lights or source your local buy groups for secondhand strands.

5. Fill your home with love and tradition

Thinking back on my childhood, it wasn’t just the decor or smells or even the food that made my parents’ home feel festive; it was the traditions we kept and the people we had over. I can’t tell you how many years I slept on a crowded mattress with my three siblings—so we could stay up for Santa, of course, but also because other beds were taken. Likewise, our traditions were everything in December. From nostalgic films (Christmas Vacation) to the town parade to my mom unboxing her holiday village and sprinkling the ceramic roofs with artificial snow.

“Filling your home with people can be more of a challenge when living in a small space, but why not try?!”

Space doesn’t matter when it comes to tradition, so embrace the ones you loved from your younger years and create a few new ones. For my husband and I, our tradition is to sort through all the ornaments and decorations we’ve collected from traveling and living abroad. I also have a very faded and wobbly Nutcracker from when I was seven that I put out every year. Most importantly, I make cinnamon rolls from scratch for Christmas morning, and it’s a tradition I hope to continue with my own kids someday, no matter the size of the home we’re living in.

Filling your home with people can be more of a challenge when living in a small space, but why not try?! Sure, my box of an apartment doesn’t offer the same space as a larger home, but the love and laughter my friends bring when we get together for “mini holiday parties” feel the same. Space size becomes irrelevant.

However you choose to celebrate the holidays, and no matter your home’s size or budget, I hope you can find ways to bring a bit of festivity and magic into your living space. If you’re struggling to figure it out, may these ideas help. And if you have your own, I’d love to hear about them in the comments. To you and yours this season. ✨

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team has researched and tested dozens of sustainable humidifiers for safe, high-quality, and affordable options — these are our top seven picks.

Deal with sinus congestion, dry skin, or colds every winter? Happens to the best of us! That’s why we like to prep for the season with a reliable humidifier. Humidifiers add just enough moisture to the air to keep us feeling warm and hydrated.

What are the benefits of using a humidifier?

Numerous benefits come from using a humidifier in your home. The added moisture in the air from humidifiers can help relieve dryness of the skin, nose, and throat caused by the weather or heaters. If you’re prone to allergies or have asthma, using a humidifier can also help you find relief by keeping your airways moist, especially during the night when you sleep or if you’re feeling ill. Humidifiers even benefit our furniture and instruments, helping prevent them from drying out over time. Be sure not to overuse your humidifier as too much moisture can have adverse impacts on your home. Optimal moisture levels for your space will typically range from 30-50%.

While many big-box humidifiers are popular, they’re not always the most sustainable, often requiring plastic filters or large amounts of electricity. Instead, here are the best humidifiers for an eco-friendly home using energy-efficient technology, paper filters (or none!), and automatic controls. Many are even a combination air purifier and humidifier or humidifier and diffuser — a win for the winter!

Our criteria:

  • DURABILITY | These humidifiers are made with high-quality materials and backed by warranties, so you can use them for years. Some even have nontoxic materials for an even cleaner home!
  • DESIGN AND QUALITY | With beautiful, sleek, natural, and modern designs made with high-quality materials, you’ll find a humidifier on our list that suits your style.
  • COVERAGE AREA | We’ve included humidifiers that cover both small and large spaces for optimal effectiveness.

If you’d prefer two separate devices, check out our guide to the best air purifiers. Better yet, consider these indoor plants, which naturally clean and add moisture to the air in your home!

Our team of parents has reviewed dozens of bath towels for babies and young kids — these are our favorites for soft, safe, and sustainable bath time.

Bath time is one of our favorite rituals in our children’s evening routines, and having the right towel can make all the difference. Babies’ skin is incredibly delicate, so the towels we choose matter, as those with synthetic dyes or harsh finishes can irritate sensitive skin, especially in the first few months. Because of this, we prefer organic options.

Why choose organic towels for your baby?

Choosing the right towel for our babies is about more than softness; it’s about safety and peace of mind. Newborn skin is delicate, so opting for organic cotton, bamboo, or linen can help us avoid those unnecessary exposures. Certifications like GOTS or OEKO-TEX® give us extra confidence that the towels meet strict safety and environmental standards, while naturally dyed or lightly colored options often indicate a cleaner, gentler production process.

And it’s not just about comfort. Choosing organic towels is a small but meaningful step toward a healthier planet. Supporting brands that prioritize organic farming and responsible textile practices helps reduce pesticide use, conserve water, and ensure safer working conditions for the people who make these products. It’s a little change with a significant impact — good for our babies and good for the world they’re growing up in.

Our criteria:

We update this list regularly with our emerging favorites, and all of our picks are vetted to meet the following standards:

  • ORGANIC & CLEAN | Each towel is made from natural or recycled fibers, such as organic cotton, bamboo, or linen, and is certified by third parties, including GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and PFAS-free, to ensure safety.
  • COMFORT | Our editors have personally tested each towel for softness, absorbency, and durability. We’ve also read hundreds of parent reviews to ensure these towels are gentle on sensitive skin while staying cozy and functional.
  • ENVIRONMENT | Each brand cares for the earth, its employees, and its customers. These companies are committed to sustainable practices, ethical labor, and reducing environmental impact.

MagicLinen’s waffle baby towel is one of those beautifully simple essentials that quickly becomes part of your little one’s everyday routine. The linen–cotton blend feels soft and breathable, and the waffle weave offers just the right amount of texture to absorb water without weighing your baby down. It has a hood (!!) and dries quickly, too — a small detail that makes busy evenings and constant laundry feel a bit easier.

It’s also OEKO-TEX® certified, so you can trust that it’s free from harmful chemicals. And we have to say: the earthy tones are especially dreamy.

Editor review | “We rotate between two baby towels during the week, and our daughter clearly prefers this one. We’ve been using it since she was just a few weeks old, and I love how soft yet absorbent the fabric is. We have it in Cinnamon, and the color is absolutely gorgeous. The size is just right, too. We’ve outfitted our bedrooms with sustainable options for a decade — these are our favorite nontoxic upholstered bed frames for a cozier sleep.

We have a hot take…

As much as we love teak furniture and brass fixtures when decorating our homes, there’s nothing quite like crawling into an upholstered bed with silky smooth sheets and soft fabric lining. Our beds essentially level up from a place to rest to a serene oasis!

What should you look for in an upholstered bed frame?

When choosing an upholstered bed frame, we recommend prioritizing quality materials and thoughtful design. Look for frames constructed from solid wood or metal, as these materials offer superior durability. The upholstery fabric of your new bed frame should be durable, easy to clean, and suitable for your lifestyle — i.e. consider stain-resistant options if you have pets or children. The bed’s design, including the style and height of the headboard, should provide the desired level of comfort, especially if you enjoy sitting up in bed. Additionally, ensure the bed frame fits your room’s proportions and the size of your mattress, with a sturdy support system like closely spaced slats or a solid platform to prevent sagging.

Beyond aesthetics and comfort, it’s also important to consider a bed frame’s health benefits. An upholstered bed frame should use organic or low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) fabrics, to help prevent exposure to harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde and flame retardants. This is particularly important for those with allergies, respiratory sensitivities, or who desire to maintain a healthier indoor air quality. Additionally, nontoxic bed frames contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle by reducing environmental impact during production and disposal. (If you’ve got a knack for DIY, you can even upcycle your old bed frame!) Investing in a nontoxic bed frame not only enhances your well-being by promoting a cleaner sleep environment but also aligns with eco-friendly values, making it a great choice for both your health and the planet.

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally lived with sustainable and nontoxic furniture and bedding, researched and corresponded with the top brands, and read thousands of customer reviews to make our selections. The options on this list are all nontoxic, sustainably made, and will enhance the comfort and overall look of your bedroom. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet the following criteria.

  • NONTOXIC | These upholstered bed frames are made with natural and organic materials — from frame to fabric — that are better for your sleep, your health, and the planet.
  • SUSTAINABLE | The brands on this list not only use recycled and responsibly-sourced materials, they also prioritize fair labor practices and build products that are made to last for years to come.
  • COMFORT & DESIGN | All of the options on this list will add a new level of comfort and quality to your bedroom setup.

Effortlessly upgrade your space with these beautiful beds…you’ll thank us later. 😉

If you’re looking for restful sleep on a cooling mattress, we’ve selected our favorites that are comfortable, affordable, and use natural and organic materials.

There’s nothing worse than waking up in a pool of sweat. Whether your room is too hot, your mattress lacks ventilation, you’re fighting an illness, or you’re going through hormonal shifts (like menopause), having your sleep disrupted due to temperature is exhausting — quite literally. That’s why when we talk about sleep hygiene and investing in our bedding, we’re adamant about finding quality mattress brands that care about these issues. Nontoxic and organic certifications are essential, as are cooling properties and technology to ensure optimal rest and sleep. While cooling sheets, fans, and airflow can help with comfort, a mattress that helps regulate temperature is the ultimate game-changer, so we’re excited about the brands below.

What should you look for in a cooling mattress?

Many natural and organic materials offer cooling properties on their own. Wool, for example, is sometimes referred to as nature’s air conditioner and can help regulate temperature in sleepwear and bedding (this study specifically analyzed wool’s impact on sleep quality). This is our favorite material to look for in mattresses that promise cooling properties, as it’s the safest option for our health and the environment. Just be sure to check how the brand is sourcing its wool (looking for fair trade and responsibility sourcing certifications).

Our criteria:

We’ve personally tested and researched the top nontoxic, eco-friendly, and organic mattress brands. These are our picks for the best cooling mattresses that are safe and comfortable at a range of price points. We regularly update this piece with new favorites that meet the criteria below.

  • NATURAL MATERIALS | We spend a lot of time in bed, so the quality of our mattress materials matters. These brands use natural and nontoxic materials for your health and safety.
  • COMFORT | We’ve prioritized brands that we’ve personally slept on to make sure you have comfortable and supportive sleep.
  • AFFORDABILITY | Mattresses are an investment. We’ve included at least one option at a lower price point for smaller budgets.

For more mattress options, check out our favorite organic mattress brands.

I accidentally got ours too high for our new bed, and they allowed me to exchange for the lower one hassle-free. Everyone from the customer care representatives to the delivery men were so professional and kind. I will never buy a mattress anywhere else. Seriously the best company ever. We also bought their sheets and pillows. Everything is of the highest quality and comfort. Look no further. You found the best there is.” – Melissa S (Read more reviews)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors and their families have slept the best organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly mattresses for a decade — these are our favorite options for an organic twin mattress.

Buying a mattress is an important investment, especially when shopping for the one your kids are sleeping on. Dr. Nora Fahdan a pediatrician in California emphasizes the importance of sleep in a child’s development: “Sleep is so important for their physical health, their brain development, and their ability to regulate their emotions.” Quality sleep in children starts with a mattress that supports healthy growth, proper posture, and overall well-being.

We know that choosing a mattress that fits your home, budget, and values can be an extensive process — so we’ve created this guide to help you narrow down the most eco-friendly, sustainably made, and non-toxic options. Whether you’re shopping for your kids, in need of a smaller mattress for yourself, or building out a guest room, these brands have safe and comfy options for more restorative sleep.

Why are organic and nontoxic mattresses important, especially for kids?

Organic and nontoxic mattresses are essential for kids because they provide a healthier sleep environment and are free from harmful chemicals like flame retardants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in traditional mattresses. These chemicals can off-gas and pose health risks, especially to children, whose developing bodies are more vulnerable.

“Sleep is so important for their physical health, their brain development, and their ability to regulate their emotions.”

– Dr. Nora Fahdan, pediatrician

Organic mattresses, made from natural materials like organic cotton and latex, are the better option as they offer better air quality, reducing the risk of allergies and respiratory issues, while helping contribute to better sleep quality for children. Natural materials like organic wool and latex are also highly breathable, helping to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, which keeps kids comfortable throughout the night. This can lead to deeper, more restorative sleep, which is crucial for their physical and cognitive development. They also provide comfort and support crucial for growing bodies while being environmentally friendly, thanks to the use of natural and organic materials.

By investing in an organic mattress, you’ll not only be prioritizing your child’s immediate health but also their long-term well-being and sleep quality.

What are the relevant certifications?

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This certification ensures that textiles are made from at least 95% organic fibers and processed without toxic chemicals. It also covers social criteria like fair wages and safe working conditions.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): GOLS applies specifically to latex foam and guarantees that it is at least 95% organic and processed without harmful additives.
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: This certification tests all components of the mattress for over 1,000 harmful substances, including heavy metals and pesticides, ensuring the mattress is safe for human health.
  • GREENGUARD Gold: GREENGUARD Gold indicates that a mattress has low chemical emissions, promoting healthy indoor air quality — especially important for children’s products.
  • MADE SAFE®: This certification confirms that the mattress is made without known toxic chemicals, including flame retardants and PFAS, making it safer for both people and the environment.

How to choose a twin mattress for your little one:

Choosing the right twin mattress for your child involves balancing comfort, support, and safety. First, consider firmness: Children generally need a medium-firm mattress that provides proper spinal support while still feeling comfortable, as overly soft mattresses can increase the risk of suffocation or poor posture. Materials are another key factor — look for organic or non-toxic options like GOTS-certified cotton, GOLS-certified latex, or mattresses free from flame retardants and harmful chemicals. Breathable, hypoallergenic fabrics can help regulate temperature and reduce allergens, which is especially important for kids with sensitivities. You’ll also want a mattress with durability to withstand years of jumping, playing, and growth, and one that is easy to clean or has a removable, washable cover.

Finally, certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE®, or OEKO-TEX® can provide peace of mind that the mattress is safe for your child’s health and indoor air quality. By considering firmness, materials, and safety certifications, you can choose a twin mattress that supports healthy sleep and overall well-being for your little one!

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally slept on, researched, corresponded with brands, and read thousands of customer reviews to select the best organic, nontoxic, and supportive twin-sized mattresses for you and your family.

  • ORGANIC | The brands on this list boast certifications like GOLS to ensure they’re natural, organic materials like latex, wool, cotton, and/or down.
  • NONTOXIC | All of the options on this list are free of harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals.
  • SUPPORTIVE | These mattresses are supportive and durable — not only will they last, they’ll offer you more restorative sleep.

Looking for crib mattresses? We love these organic crib mattresses with non-toxic materials. Be sure to pair your child’s new mattress with these organic bedding options, too.

The post 10 Best Organic Crib Mattresses For Your Baby (2025) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’re not just editors, we’re also moms. After reviewing clean mattresses for a decade in our family homes, these are our top selections for a nontoxic and organic baby mattress.

Babies under a year old sleep a lot — upwards of 12–16 hours a day. This sleep is critical in supporting both their cognitive and physical growth. But how much thought do you give to what they’re sleeping on? Traditionally, crib mattresses are made of or topped with polyurethane foam, which comes from petroleum, and they often contain potentially dangerous fire retardants. Plus, crib mattresses’ vinyl linings can emit harmful phthalates. Yuck.

Below, we discuss the essentials of organic crib mattresses and round up the best healthy crib mattresses on the market. Read on to learn more. 👶

Why are organic and nontoxic crib mattresses important?

Natural or organic mattresses reduce exposure to harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional mattresses. They can also be resistant to allergens, and offer durability through high-quality materials. These mattresses are often made with natural materials like organic cotton or wool, promoting better air quality and a safer sleeping environment for babies.

Let’s talk about potentially harmful chemicals. You know that weird smell when you first open something from a factory, like a mattress? That’s called off-gassing, and polyurethane foam is known for it. What you’re smelling are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and according to the American Lung Association they can be harmful in high amounts. In general, the less synthetic a mattress is, the less VOCs it emits. Crib mattresses are also often lined in vinyl — great for its waterproofing ability, sure, but not so great since it emits phthalates, chemicals linked to harmful health effects like disrupting your endocrine system.

“We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

-Dr. Jerome Paulson, pediatrician

Since mattresses must contain flame retardants to meet government flammability standards, many companies use synthetic ones like boric acid, PBDEs, and antimony trioxide. Children are most vulnerable to the potential toxic effects of these synthetic chemicals because they’re still developing, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Jerome Paulson, a George Washington University pediatrician, stated in the Chicago Tribune: “We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

What should you look for when purchasing organic crib mattresses?

Alright, so we’ve gone over how some crib mattresses can be less than ideal for a baby’s health. So how do you shop for a better option? Your best bet is to look for third-party certifications that indicate product safety. The following are the ones we look for when it comes to organic crib mattresses:

  • GOLS Certified (Global Organic Latex Standard): This certification ensures that the latex in your crib mattress contains more than 95% certified organic raw material. Stringent environmental and social criteria must also be met throughout the product’s supply chain in order to be certified.
  • GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard): In order to receive a GOTS certification, 95% of a product’s materials must be certified organic. This certification is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. They also monitor strict worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A crib mattress with this certification ensures the product won’t emit VOCs at a harmful level. GREENGUARD’s standards is one of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive for ensuring the lowest emissions and off-gassing.
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: A crib mattress with this certification means it’s free of 100 commonly used toxic substances and allergens (from raw materials to final product).
  • MADE SAFE: This nontoxic certification requires your crib mattress to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained.
  • USDA Certified Organic: This seal guarantees that the raw materials used in your crib mattress, such as cotton or wool, are at least 95% organic. However, unlike GOTS certification, it does not account for chemicals used during production or certify the entire mattress.

Our criteria:

There are a lot of organic crib mattress brands on the market — from niche organic cotton crib mattress brands to affordable organic baby mattress lines from larger manufacturers — so we’ve selected the best sustainable brands making nontoxic crib mattresses for your little ones using the criteria below. We regularly update this list with emerging standouts.

  • ORGANIC | Each brand’s mattresses are made of natural or recycled materials like cotton, wool, latex, and recycled or clean polymers that meet third-party specs. We also look for brands that are PFAS-free.

  • FIRMNESS | Every mattress is firm to give your baby a safer sleeping experience and to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • PRICE | While we’ve selected mattresses across a range of price points, they’re all high quality and long-lasting.

Our Editor’s Review | “The first thing I noticed when we did reading time that night was how luxurious the mattress felt. It had just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. Because here’s the thing about sleeping on a cloud: It’s not very good for your spine! Our bodies need enough support from our sleeping surfaces to keep us in alignment, and luckily the Pure Eco mattress provides that support beneath the cushy hand-tufted 100% organic GOTS-certified wool and cotton top. (Another cool thing about the wool? It acts as a non-chemical alternative flame retardant!)” – Stephanie Fallon, Contributing Editor [Read the full review.]

What are common harmful substances found in crib mattresses?

While you can find more affordable crib mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all crib mattresses are created equal. Most conventional crib mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that impact your home’s air quality and most importantly, your baby’s health with chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches.
Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to conditions such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
Aside from short-term irritationchronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.

I slept on dozens of nontoxic and organic cotton sheets — these are my favorites from ethical brands for your health, comfort, ease of care, and long-lasting durability.

We spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, and for good reason — sleep is the bedrock of our health and how we restore our body, mind, and nervous system after a full day. It’s important to consider the fabric our bedding is made of to ensure comfort, safety, and longevity, which is why organic cotton is such a lovely option. Organic cotton is not only soft, breathable, and lightweight, but it also contributes to a healthy, safe sleep environment because it’s grown without harmful chemicals.

Why choose organic sheets?

During the many hours we’re asleep, we’re not only soaking up restorative rest. Our bodies interact with materials and fibers that have a history — and conventionally grown cotton is often sprayed with toxic pesticides that cause harmful runoff into the earth, are dangerous to the surrounding ecosystems, and can later leach into our skin. Not exactly the kind of fabric I’d like to get in bed with. 😉

Not only does conventionally grown cotton contribute to environmental damage, but the chemicals used in the process can cause health problems after long-term exposure (like 8+ hours per day!) and daily discomfort (think irritation for those with sensitive skin). Choosing organic cotton sheets is a simple way to forgo all of these unwanted details.

What should you look for when shopping?

We look for the following certifications when shopping for organic cotton sheets..

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton and other textile components. Textile products must be made from 95% certified organic raw materials to become GOTS Certified. GOTS also requires stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. GOTS’ rigorous certification process requires their environmental and social criteria are met throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a nontoxic certification for everyday products, including bedding. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is heavily screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your bedding meets some of the world’s most comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a bedding product is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most meticulous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that the bedding materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. To become a B Corp, organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions. While some companies claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, it’s important to note that it is not an official certification.
  • 1% for the Planet: Brands that are members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. It’s best to review that the entire product is vegan and not just a handful of the components.

Our criteria:

After personally testing, researching, corresponding with brands, and combing through customer reviews, we’ve selected the best natural and organic sheets from sustainable bedding brands that prioritize healthy, comfortable sleep. For this guide, I tested 11 sets of organic cotton sheets and spent the night with each one, evaluating the feel before and after washing each set, and recording any noteworthy details.

A collection of packaged bedding sets from various brands is arranged near a window with natural light coming through.
I tested 11 sets of organic cotton sheets from our favorite ethical brands. Below, I’ve made notes on each brand’s credentials, their look and feel (before and after wash!), and how I slept in each set.

We update this list regularly with our emerging favorites that meet the following criteria:

  • ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | Each brand’s sheets are made with organic cotton and never treated with any harsh chemicals. The brands on this list have third-party certifications so you can rest easy knowing they’re safe.
  • ETHICAL, ECO-FRIENDLY, & SUSTAINABLE | The brands on this list are thoughtful about how they treat their employees, the earth, and their customers. We’ve chosen companies committed to sustainable, safe processes for products and people.
  • COMFORTABLE | I slept on each set and made notes regarding the softness, weight, durability, and feel before and after washing each set. I also added notes based on past experience with brands where relevant, too. If you have questions about anything, let us know in the comments and we’ll reply!

If you’re looking to complete your bedding set, you might want to start from square one with our favorite organic mattress protectors. And for layering on top of your sheets, take a look at our picks for organic comforters, too!

Boll & Branch blends ethics, health, and luxury like no other. Our family loves a good flannel set, so I couldn’t resist trying Boll & Branch’s 100% organic cotton flannel. Ours arrived beautifully packaged in ribbon and paper so pretty I’ll be saving it for gift wrap. For this one, I tried a beautiful seasonal design (since flannel is the most seasonal of all materials!). The brand’s sheets are made by artisans in Portugal — and even go through a process of shearing and brushing that prevents pilling so you can be sure they’ll wear like a dream. The medium-weight feel of the sheets is noticeably high quality, and reminded me of a thin, plush throw blanket. This is the set my husband keeps asking me to put back on the bed — and I’ll happily oblige! These sheets are a steeper cost than other options on the list, but Boll & Branch offers free shipping, free returns, and a 30-night risk-free trial to ensure you’re happy with the investment.

Everything from the brand is detail-oriented and well done, from production to the finished product. This set has more of a light-to-medium weight feel (which is my personal preference), and I love the soft, delicate detailing on the top sheet. The details on The Citizenry’s sheets put them in the running for the most charming on this list — plus, free shipping and 30-day returns makes ordering simple and easy.

West Elm is a longtime favorite for offering a variety of quality organic and fair trade home goods all in one place. Their Organic Washed Cotton Percale Sheet set includes fitted and flat sheets, plus two pillowcases, and comes in various beautiful, light earth tones. These also have more of a light-medium weight feel, similar to the Citizenry’s, and lean more cozy than cool. I had time for a repeat sleep for a select few sets, and one of the sets I reached for was West Elm’s due to the cooler temps at the time of this review. These sheets are garment washed before shipping so they’re luxoriously soft from the start, and they’re also contact grade so you know that they’ll last for years to come. West Elm’s site makes it easy to pair them with comforters and throws of various colors and styles if you prefer pairing these sheets with something bolder. Shipping is free, returns are easy, and so is browsing for anything else you might need for your home. Plus, you can always make a return on standard items up to 30 days after delivery.

I’m typically a top-sheet kind of girl, but Homebird made me a convert! Their fitted sheet set includes one fitted sheet and two pillowcases. If you do prefer a flat sheet, note that it’s sold separately for $115, which some customers like in order to mix and match colors. As for me, I didn’t miss the top sheet! This set is crisp feeling, even after washing. It’s a great year-round option for those who sleep hot, or to swap out when springtime hits. Homebird’s organic cotton is grown ethically in India, and they’re incredibly transparent with their traceable supply chain. These sets also come with a drawstring bag for easy laundering and storage, which has now become a non-negotiable for me, personally. The post 10 Organic Bath Towels Reviewed By Our Editors (2025) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We personally tested and researched the top bath linens made using organic and natural materials — these are our top ten favorites for a range of budgets.

What’s better than coming out of the shower feeling squeaky clean and wrapping yourself up in a warm bath towel? Few things feel as luxurious or relaxing — especially when you snuggle up in a towel made from organic and natural materials.

The whole setup makes showering feel like a chore, even though it’s a crucial practice for maintaining my mental (and physical) health. So to find the very best of the best in 2025, I’ve reviewed organic and all-natural towels from our favorite brands to see which ones meet my standards for quality, sustainability, and affordability.

Below, you’ll find my top ten favorite bath towels and bath sheets, all made using natural and pesticide-free materials and produced in fair labor environments. There’s a wide range of pricing, but know this: You can’t go wrong with any of these bath linens. (For extra luxury, upgrade to a bath sheet — I’ve never tried one before now, and am absolutely smitten).

But do you know what your towels are made from? I’ve had my current towels for over a decade and the tags have long since faded or been cut off. My unmatching washcloths are just as old, and are in even worse shape — they’re hardly square anymore thanks to shrinking, and the edges are tattered and frayed.

A stack of folded organic towels and washcloths in shades of purple and gray sits on a white tiled bathroom surface with a black-and-white border on the wall.
My old towels for reference!

For me, I’ll eventually retire my old towels and use them for cleaning or share them with my pets (maybe even donate to an animal shelter). But from here on out, I’m sold on plush towels for my self-care shower routine, especially since they’ll last me another ten years — or more.

Our methodology & criteria:

I’ve used each of these brands for a few shower days, and then washed at least three times a piece to get a feel for how each towel held up. (Don’t worry, I used all of them in between each wash!) I’ve ranked the towels below in regards to their absorption, softness, drying time, and design. I don’t rank or include any towels I don’t think meet my standards for all of those qualities — and for sustainability, affordability, and durability, too. Below, you’ll find a range of options that I’m happy to include for a wide range of reasons! If you have any questions, feel free to drop in the comments below. Be sure to note that we update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet the below criteria and considerations.

  • NATURAL AND ORGANIC MATERIALS | I look for certified organic cotton whenever possible, but also look to certifications like GOTS, OEKO TEX, Fair Trade, and B Corp status to further indicate a brand’s values.
  • RANGE OF PRICES | I specifically looked for organic and natural towels that ranged from budget-friendly to more luxurious, depending on your needs (psst — add nice towels to your wedding registry!)
  • STYLES AVAILABLE | Some days I want super plush bath linens, and others I want something quick-drying and easy to care for. These brands offer a range of sizes, textures, and absorbencies.

If you’re on the market for more sustainable home goods, you won’t want to miss our roundups of the best sustainable bedding brands, organic comforters and duvet inserts, and sustainable sheet sets. Don’t forget to top off your bathing experience with these organic body washes and organic shampoo brands. Scrub-a-dub. 🛁

If you’re looking for a beautiful towel for an affordable price, Under The Canopy is the way to go. I tested the blush plush organic towel, which looks nice and plush when folded and hanging; it’d be an excellent choice for a luxurious guest bathroom without spending so gosh darn much on towels. Crafted from GOTS-certified organic cotton, these towels are dyed using vibrant, nontoxic dyes, so they’re safe for both your skin and the environment. The brand is also committed to ethical production through their cruelty-free and vegan manufacturing processes, which is a win in my book.

The weights on these towels range from 579 GSM to 650 GSM, and the brand mentions these towels are bloom and soften with each wash, enhancing their absorbency and plushness the longer you use them. While I didn’t find these towels to be the softest option on the list — I do agree that they’ll get softer with time and washing. I also found this towel strikes a balance between being lightweight and ultra-absorbent, making it quick to dry and perfect for daily use. Spring for the bath sheets too, if you have the space!

I wrapped myself in Avocado’s organic cotton bath sheets after a shower on a particularly cold day, and almost didn’t want to get dressed. It was that comfortable, and very, very large. The ribbed texture on the bath sheet not only adds an elegant look and feel, but also enhances its quick-drying capabilities, making it both functional and stylish. If you prefer towels over bath sheets, Avocado’s towels boast a substantial 700 GSM weight, providing that plush, spa-like feel we all dream of, while still remaining breathable and absorbent. Moreover, both Avocado’s bath towels and sheets are MADE SAFE® certified, meaning they are free from harmful chemicals and safe for both humans and the environment.

The only reason these towels didn’t make my number one pick was the price. Avocado’s prices reflect the longevity, quality, and sustainability of the products, but spending triple digits on a bath sheet ($129 to be precise) may be difficult to justify for most folks. But, oh, the absolute delight it was to wrap myself in one of these luxuriously soft and warm bath sheets!

Add these Avocado towels to a wedding registry or request as a gift, you won’t be disappointed.

3. Piglet in Bed

Eco friendly packaging

Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Small business
Woman owned

Best For | Thick & plush bath towels
Materials | 100% organic & OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cotton
Sustainability | Ethically made in Portugal & Turkey, ethically sourced cotton in partnership with the Better Cotton Initiative
Standard Towel Price | $49

Discounts Available | Enjoy up to 40% off and at least 25% off everything else for a limited time at Piglet in Bed

If ever I were to spend the whole day wrapped in nothing but a bath towel (dream day, anyone?), my first choice would be Piglet in Bed. These towels and washcloths are thick with a smooth, almost-satiny texture, and wash up like a dream (they’re still as soft as they were on day one). Woven in Turkey and Portugal from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, these towels are crafted OEKO-TEX facilities, ensuring they’re free from harmful chemicals and manufactured under fair working conditions. When it comes to weight, these towels are an impressive 700 GSM weight (I did say thick and plush!), yet are still breathable and quick-drying. The zero-twist yarn construction enhances the towel’s softness but also makes it more durable, so you’ll still be left with a fluffy towel wash after wash.

I especially love keeping these bath sheets on hand for houseguests — they upgrade my apartment bathroom to quite the luxurious, welcoming space, and the mushroom color I tested is easy to hide random makeup stains. Note that not all the towels are certified organic, although they are all made using sustainable, ethically sourced materials. (I’ve got my eye on the brand’s linen bed sheets next, just look at the gingham 😍).

4. Homebird

Fair trade
Family owned
GOTS certified
Natural materials

Best For | Quick-drying mid-weight towels
Materials | 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton
Sustainability | Made in Fairtrade certified factories, grown without pesticides, sustainable & transparent practices
Standard Towel Price | $57 – $67

As a brand dedicated to both luxurious and sustainable materials, Homebird has been making a splash in the home linens space since 2021. I tested the classic bath sheet set in navy and white, which I’ve found to be a minimalist’s dream. Not only is the towel a perfect mid-weight so it dries quickly, but I also love the simple touch of the piped edges which elevates the whole look. The discreet hanging loop is also a much-appreciated feature, making it super easy to dry and store the towel.

I found the 600 GSM weight for their classic bath sheet a great balance balance between plushness and practicality, making these towels a great option if you’re looking for both comfort and efficiency. The towels are made using “long-staple” organic cotton, which means they’ll be sturdier and softer in the long run — and I have to say, it’s a quality you can definitely feel. It’s also nice to see the Fairtrade logo on the tags for these towels, a good reminder about who makes the items we use daily (and in what labor conditions) matters.

You can save around 10% when you opt for the six-piece bundle!

5. Ettitude

Small space-dwellers, rejoice! Ettitude’s towels are lush and soft, but not bulky or thick making them the best choice for folks who need to be smart with their storage. The unique waffle weave design not only adds a touch of elegance but also enhances absorbency and accelerates drying time. This texture provides gentle exfoliation, making the towels suitable for those with sensitive skin, while still maintaining a soft, plush feel. (I could almost envision these towels being repurposed as comfort blankets for little ones, and the hand towel is the perfect weight for a kitchen hand towel, too.)

While these towels are not technically “organic,” they are made from 100% organic bamboo lyocell, known as CleanBamboo®, which is all natural and sensitive skin-friendly. These towels are produced through a closed-loop process that recycles water up to 200 times, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to traditional cotton. I’ve got my eye on the hair towel for my long-haired husband who needs a gentle way to dry his thick hair.

You can even bundle your towel set with a bamboo bathrobe to save up to 20%!

6. Coyuchi

I’ve had my eye on Coyuchi for a long time and am swooning over this stunning terra cotta organic towel — I never imagined I would love this color so much. This is a fabulous mid-weight ribbed towel that dries quickly without feeling too thin (or too overly fluffy). Their towels, including the 600 GSM Temescal Organic Towels, are made from long-staple Turkish cotton spun into lightweight yarns and woven into narrow channels for enhanced drying power. Unlike conventional towels treated with chemical softeners, Coyuchi’s towels are naturally soft, plush, and absorbent without feeling thick or heavy. The brand offers a variety of collections, such as the Air Weight®, Cloud Loom™, and Mediterranean, each designed to cater to different preferences in texture and weight

I am drawn to Coyuchi thanks to the range of styles and price points available — and its commitment to creating a circular lifecycle for your products which is great for heavy users. You can subscribe for your choice of bath towels at a low monthly rate, and receive new ones on a recurring basis. Coyuchi will then renew, upcycle, or recycle your gently used goods, as part of its commitment to sustainability.

You can select bundles of just towels, or select a variety of bathroom linens and save up to 10%.

7. Boll & Branch

OEKO-TEX® certified

Best For | Fluffiest organic cotton towel
Materials | 100% GOTS Certified long-staple organic cotton

Boll & Branch’s towels feel like vacation. There, I said it. If thick and fluffy is the name of your towel game, these are the ones for you. I tried two styles, the spa and the plush towels, and can say this — the plush towel’s fine terry loops make it velvety-soft right out of the box. These towels are free from harmful pesticides, GMOs, and toxins like formaldehyde, ensuring a safe and healthy experience for all. (The GOTS- and OEKO-TEX certifications give these towels that expert seal of approval.) I also love that the brand makes a huge impact through their give back initiatives that provide bedding essentials to underserved community members and hospitals.

The classic styling of Boll & Branch’s towels, alongside the fluffy terry loops, adds a touch of elegance to any bathroom! The plush would be my first choice, even though it’s slightly pricier! (Keep an eye out for sales to snag these babies for a deal). The stone color would look fab in a modern, minimalist home or apartment.

Boll & Branch’s bundles will save you around 5%, although I do really like that you can purchase most items a la carte (for when you have houseguests or if your family grows).

8. Quiet Town

Best For | Bold & colorful bath sheets
Materials | 100% GOTS certified organic cotton from Portugal
Sustainability | Ethical partners, natural materials
Standard Towel Price | $50

Discounts Available | Receive 20% off sitewide through December 1st

Quiet Town’s bath towels and sheets — like the boldly patterned Tam Bath Sheet and subtly striped Prism Bath Towel — bring the perfect pop of color to my bathroom. (As a maximalist when it comes to patterns, I was practically drooling when I first saw the available designs). Made in Portugal using 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and finished with thoughtful details like double-sided prints, checkered trims, and hanging loops, these towels are as beautiful as they are sustainable. With a plush midweight feel at 520 GSM, they are ideal for daily use adding a funky vibe to your space! I particularly love how quickly they dry (faster than ultra plush, but not quite as fast as the thinner bamboo towels on this list — but the texture is just right for me.)

The brand’s commitment to sustainability extends well beyond textiles. Founders Lisa and Michael, now based in California, infuse their personal lifestyle shift into the heart of their business — choosing slower living, bright, nature-inspired palettes, and deeper storytelling in everything they create. From compostable packaging to transparent sourcing and low-impact dyes, Quiet Town’s ethos is rooted in environmental responsibility and mindful design.

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for organic bath towels:

Materials

The foundation of any great towel is its material, and for us, organic cotton is the gold standard. We look for GOTS-certified organic cotton because it’s grown without toxic pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals, making it better for your skin and the planet. Turkish and Egyptian cotton varieties are particularly prized for their long fibers, which create softer and more durable towels (note the differences between both here). For an even lower-impact option, some brands offer towels made from hemp or a blend of organic cotton and bamboo, which are both fast-growing, renewable resources. Regardless of the fiber, an organic certification ensures the towel is safe for everyday use and responsibly produced.

Absorbency

Absorbency is non-negotiable in a good bath towel, and not all organic towels are created equal in this department. We look for towels that dry you off quickly without feeling soggy after one use. Typically, thicker loops and higher pile contribute to better water absorption, though weave type and fabric density also play a role. Some lightweight organic towels might feel great initially but underperform after a shower, so we always test towels after multiple washes to assess how well they hold up over time. The best ones balance absorbency with breathability so they don’t take forever to dry after use.

Weight

A towel’s weight is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), and this often determines how plush or lightweight it feels. Our editors generally recommend a midweight towel (500–700 GSM) for everyday use, offering a cozy balance between softness, absorbency, and ease of care. Heavier towels (700+ GSM) feel more luxurious but can take longer to dry, while lighter towels (under 500 GSM) are great for travel or humid climates where fast drying is key. We consider weight carefully depending on the intended use — luxury spa vibe, family bathroom, or gym bag essential.

Texture

Texture plays a big role in both the function and feel of a towel, and choosing the right one comes down to your personal preferences for softness, absorbency, and style. Plush towels, usually made from thick terry cloth with dense loops, feel soft and luxurious on the skin — perfect if you’re looking for that cozy, spa-like vibe. These are typically more absorbent, but they can take longer to dry and be a bit bulky in small storage spaces. Waffle towels, on the other hand, have a honeycomb weave that’s light, airy, and fast-drying. They’re ideal for warmer or more humid climates and offer a minimalist aesthetic, while gently exfoliating the skin.

But plush and waffle aren’t the only options. Ribbed towels are another texture we’ve come to appreciate — they feature raised, striped lines of fabric that offer a massaging feel and excellent breathability. Flat-weave towels are ultra-lightweight, quick-drying, and fold up small, making them great for travel, the gym, or people with limited storage. Though they’re thinner than traditional towels, they become softer and more absorbent over time. There are also velour towels, which are sheared on one side to give a smooth, almost velvet-like finish. While they feel incredibly soft, velour towels are usually less absorbent than looped styles, so we typically recommend them for lounging or decorative use rather than daily drying.

We test towels across these textures to see how they perform after multiple washes, how well they absorb moisture, and how they fit different lifestyles — from cozy homebodies to frequent travellers.

Size

Bath towels come in a range of sizes, and we always check dimensions to make sure they’ll actually suit your needs. A standard bath towel works for most people, but for added coverage and comfort, many brands offer bath sheets — essentially oversized versions of your classic towel. If you like to fully wrap yourself in a towel or want something more generous for lounging post-shower, bath sheets are the way to go. We also take note of matching sets that include hand towels and washcloths, for a coordinated and complete bathroom setup.

What’s the difference between bath sheets and bath towels?

Bath towels and bath sheets serve the same basic purpose — drying you off after a bath or shower — but the main difference comes down to size and feel. A standard bath towel usually measures around 27″ x 52″, which is big enough to get the job done but may feel a bit skimpy if you like to wrap up completely. Bath sheets, on the other hand, are much larger — typically around 35″ x 60″ or more — offering way more coverage and a spa-like experience. They’re great if you want to fully cocoon yourself in your towel, especially if you’re taller or just prefer extra room to lounge post-shower. Because of their size, bath sheets can feel more indulgent and are perfect for relaxing mornings or self-care evenings, while bath towels are more compact and practical for everyday use or smaller bathrooms. In short: Bath towels are functional and space-saving, while bath sheets offer that oversized, wrap-yourself-up-in-luxury vibe.

Bath sheets also tend to be more absorbent due to their larger surface area, making them ideal for those who prefer to dry off quickly without needing multiple towels. However, their size means they require more storage space and may take longer to dry after use. Bath towels, being smaller, are easier to handle, quicker to launder, and more suitable for tasks like drying hair or for use by children. Ultimately, the choice between a bath towel and a bath sheet depends on personal preferences, bathroom space, and lifestyle needs.
